Land on the Other Side of the Sea
Malabar Radio Station and the Black Sinterklaus
2017

Through the powerful combination of video, performance, and painting, this installation confronts the complex realities of statelessness and displacement, inviting viewers to engage with personal narratives and historical contexts. The artist's collaborative approach and use of site-specific materials add authenticity and depth to the work.

Installation View
This installation, curated by Christine Van Den Bergh at Bradwolff Project in The Netherlands, features the collaborative work of artist Raisa Kamila. The exhibition showcases a powerful exploration of statelessness and displacement through various mediums.

Uncensored Conversations
The centerpiece of the installation consists of three videos featuring unedited interviews with:
  • Mr. Frans Lopulalan, a Moluccan expelled from Indonesia in December 1959
  • Mr. and Mrs. Smits, a couple from Bogor expelled from Indonesia in December 1959
  • Ms. Nona, a Moluccan expelled from Indonesia in December 1959
These raw, uninterrupted conversations provide a platform for the subjects to share their personal experiences and perspectives on being rendered stateless.

Performance Video
An additional video documents a performance piece conducted by the artist at the Malabar Radio Station in West Java, Indonesia. This site-specific work engages with the historical context and physical remnants of the radio station, inviting viewers to explore the themes of displacement and belonging.

Painted Curtains
Six paintings, created using self-made pigments derived from bricks found in the ruins of the Malabar Radio Station, serve as curtains to cover the gallery's windows. These textured, earth-toned works echo the materiality of the performance site and add a layer of visual depth to the installation.
